We Are All Stars was created through a collaboration with Jack Straw Cultural Center. Their program Poetry & Song brings poetry and music into schools. This song I wrote based on the poems of 4th and 5th graders at Olympic View Elementary School. The words of these elementary school students inspired the music iI created. My focus was to use all their words, adding none of my own to craft a song. My focus was to create more than a song, rather to create a memory. A song each of them might carry in their hearts well into adulthood and feel inspired that they were a part of the song. After writing the song i shared it with the students and we practiced it together. And finally we went into the Jack Straw studio to record it together. It was a magical session. Getting to witness these kids learn and grow through the creative process and stand so tall and excited and proud recording together is a moment i will always treasure. To witness the transformative power of creating art. Magic.
